Russian: from the Greek name Hermolaos, composed of the elements Hermēs (the name of the messenger god; cf. ERMETE (SEE Ermete)) + lāos, leōs people, tribe. St Hermolaos (d. c.300) was martyred in Nicomedia together with his brothers Hermippos and Hermocrates, who shared the first element of his name (combined respectively with hippos horse and kratein to rule), according to a pattern common in the classical period and later.
